Whiskey cocktails with a twist

by Jordan Catapano

The temperatures jumped up a notch last weekend and the cover was ripped off our grill faster than a magician’s tablecloth trick. I have a feeling the BBQ’d drink menu will be short-lived if the meteorologist’s forecast proves correct, but the anticipation of cloudy skies didn’t stop me from satisfying my crave for a Whiskey Sour. To change things up, I made a homemade sweet n’ sour with lemons and limes charred on the grill. The taste is subtly smoky, adding a great layer of flavor to a timeless drink.

Whiskey Sour (BBQ Style!)

2 ounces Bulleit Rye Whiskey
2 ounces homemade sweet n’ sour
Garnish with a cherry

For sweet n’ sour, slice twelve lemons and twelve limes and place on the grill until slightly charred. Hand squeeze or use a citrus juicer to collect the liquid, then filter through a sieve to strain out pulp and blackened pieces. Measure the amount of juice you have and add equal parts sugar and water. I usually start with half of the sugar and water I think I need, and slowly add more until it’s the right balance.

And now for the pomegranate and whiskey cocktail.

Pomegranates are in season (as you’ve probably noticed from the overflowing bins at the supermarket) and especially delicious in a clear corn whiskey cocktail. Actually, this whiskey lends itself well to a spectrum of fruit mixes and liqueurs, and should be tried as a spirit substitute in drink favorites like Margaritas, Cosmopolitans, and Bloody Marys.

Pomegranate Whiskey

2 ounces The Original Moonshine Clear Corn Whiskey
½ ounce Caravella orange liqueur
2 ounces fresh pomegranate juice
Garnish with pomegranate wedge or orange slice
